Introduction

I visited Poland on 3 occasions in 1994-6, each time to a factory in the south western city of Wroclaw (pronounced "Vrotswav") in Lower Silesia.  All of my visits were in the winter, so I never had the benefit of seeing the city or its surroundings bathed in summer sunshine.  Wroclaw is on the River Odra, which further downstream forms the border between Poland and Germany.  The German name for the river is the Oder.  With a population of over half a million, Wroclaw is one of the largest cities in Poland.

Many of these photos were taken in and around the old historic city centre.  I have not been back since 1996, but it is clear from various websites that the city has developed and prospered in more recent years.  One such website that of Wroclaw City Council, www.wroclaw.pl (link opens in new window or tab).  It includes a beautiful photo gallery of Wroclaw today and it was nice to see how many of the buildings and areas featured on this page have changed.

All photos have been scanned from prints.  Currently if you click on an image, a larger version will open in a new window, but I will be changing this when I update this page shortly.

Old Town Hall and Central Squares

The Ratusz (old Town Hall) and the Rynek (main square) in which it is situated.  From looking at other websites, the Rynek now has a fountain which has become a popular tourist attraction and is illuminated at night.

Next to the Rynek is a smaller square Plac Solny, which was the site of a busy market.

Churches

Wroclaw Cathedral has twin spires and is dedicated to St John the Baptist.  Another very attractive old church is St Mary on the Sands on nearby Piasek Island, renowned for its triptychs.

River Odra and Bridges

Built on the River Odra, Wroclaw is a city of many bridges.  There are more than 100 in the city.  Here are some wintry views of the river.  The first picture shows Most Grunwaldzki, which is now floodlit at night.

The University

Wroclaw has a large university close to the River Odra.  Here are 2 pictures of the main buildings facing the river taken as night was falling and 2 further daytime scenes.
