Introduction

This is one of a series of pages aiming to place ROF Risley into a national context by describing the locations and current situations of the 16 Royal Ordnance Filling Factories that were active during World War II.  Most of my information has come from online searches and looking at Google's aerial imagery.  If you believe that you can add to any of this information or improve its accuracy, please get in touch through my Contact page (linked from the Contents page).

On this page:  Filling Factories 5-8.

Filling Factories 5-8

Filling Factory 5: Swynnerton

Pre-1974 County:  Staffordshire
Post-1974 County:  Staffordshire

Location:
South of Swynnerton village, to the west of Stone, and just west of the M6.

Current Situation:
Looks to be largely derelict and undeveloped, although there has been some demolition and site clearance, and there is a more modern looking road or track cutting through part of the site.  The old roads appear to have been renamed, suggesting that redevelopment is imminent.

Filling Factory 6: Risley

Pre-1974 County:  Lancashire
Post-1974 County:  Cheshire

Location:
Birchwood, north east of the centre of Warrington.

Current Situation:
Parts of the site were used by UKAEA and The Admiralty, although it remained largely intact until the 1970s when work began to create the modern district of Birchwood.  In the residential areas, traces of the factory remain although are often difficult to spot.  Several former factory buildings and roads remain in the Business Park.  Four of the original 20 bunkers remain within what is now the park.  In the 1980s, one housed a history exhibition, all of them have been reportedly filled in.

Filling Factory 7: Kirkby

Pre-1974 County:  Lancashire
Post-1974 County:  Merseyside

Location:
Knowsley Industrial Park, east of Kirkby, near Liverpool.

Current Situation:
Redeveloped in the 1950s and 60s into the Industrial Park.  Road layout and several buildings appear to be original.

Filling Factory 8: Aycliffe

Pre-1974 County:  County Durham
Post-1974 County:  County Durham

Location:
The south edge of Newton Aycliffe..

Current Situation:
Mainly an industrial estate.  Some of the old road layout remains and a number of buildings also survive, although progressively fewer in number.  Some of this information came from a conversation with someone who works in the area.
