Risley Royal Ordnance Factory
Filling Factories Nationally, Page 5

Introduction

This is one of a series of pages aiming to place ROF Risley into a national context by describing the locations and current situations of the 16 Royal Ordnance Filling Factories that were active during World War II.  Most of my information has come from online searches and looking at Google's aerial imagery.  If you believe that you can add to any of this information or improve its accuracy, please get in touch through my Contact page (linked from the Contents page).

On this page:  Filling Factories 15-18.

Filling Factories 15-18

Filling Factory 15: Walsall

Pre-1974 County:  Staffordshire
Post-1974 County:  West Midlands

Location:
South of Walsall town centre and Walsall Golf Course, and just to the north/east of the M6 where the M5 splits from it.

Current Situation:
Appears to be no sign of the ROF  and housing now occupies the site which was once linked to the large network of sidings at Bescot, on the opposite side of the M6.  The site was taken over by W&T Avery for a period after the war and the site appears to have remained until at least the 1970s.
Thank you to Phil Bartlett and Mike Hollick for helping with the location and history of the site.  Mike is writing a book about the history of the area with contributions from Phil who contacted me with the information, much appreciated!

Filling Factory 16: Elstow

Pre-1974 County:  Bedfordshire
Post-1974 County:  Bedfordshire

Location:
Between the villages of Elstow and Wilstead to the south of Bedford.

Current Situation:
The site closed down after the war and remained undeveloped until very recently, with many buildings and old roads surviving.  The new town of Wixams is now being built on the site.

Filling Factory 17: Featherstone

Pre-1974 County:  Staffordshire
Post-1974 County:  Staffordshire

Location:
North of Wolverhampton, immediately west of Featherstone village and just to the north of the M54.

Current Situation:
The northern part of the site has modern buildings, but much of the site looks to have simply been left after it closed.  Many buildings remain, though some have been demolished, many of the earth mounds are still in place and the old factory roads are still there.  I read that a planning application to develop the site was recently turned down.

Filling Factory 18: Burghfield

Pre-1974 County:  Berkshire
Post-1974 County:  Berkshire

Location:
South west of Reading and east of Burghfield village.

Current Situation:
Continued in use and later merged with other establishments to become one of the sites of the AWE.  Many of the buildings look as though they are probably original and are surrounded by earth mounds and the road layout is also likely to be largely from the ROF.

As an operational establishment,
I prefer not to display a satellite image
of this former ROF Filling Factory.
I have no idea if there are any rules about this,
but I prefer to play safe, just in case!
There are only 2 factory sites where I have
taken this approach.
