Woodside Ferry, Birkenhead From Land | From the River | Landing Stage and Walkways | Terminal Building | Outside This is the first of 2 pages recording the changes that took place in the 1980s. On this page are photos taken in 1984-85 showing the old facilities before the changes or just as they were beginning. This page has recently been updated (Jan 2017), although the information below hasn't changed since 2011. Please note that if any images from my website are shared on social media, the image must be shared unedited and without any cropping. More information here. The Old Landing Stage from Land All taken from about the same place, showing slightly different angles. Views from the River The landing stage viewed from ferries just arriving at or leaving Woodside. The 6th picture looks across the landing stage up the gap which once took the roadway for the vehicle ferries. The gap has now been sealed off and partly filled. The 7th photo shows the northern end of the old landing stage. It was much longer than the current construction and the northern walkways were used for cattle on their way to the old lairage. On the Landing Stage and in the Walkways The fist 2 photos show similar views looking up one of the twin passenger walkways towards to the terminal building. Passengers embarking and disembarking used separate walkways. There were also external paths on either side, although I remember them being closed most of the time. Inside the Terminal Building Photos 1 and 2 both show the payment kiosks from inside. Photos 3 and 4 are looking down from near the kiosks towards the walkways. This part of the building was demolished to make way for the new facilities. The spot where I was standing for photo 3 would now be in the Woodside Cafe, looking out towards the old light. The next 3 photos were all taken from the front of the kiosks (i.e. the bus station side). Outside Views from the bus station and under the front canopy. There is a much more recent view looking under the canopy on the Entrance Hall page. In the final picture, taken in May 1986, the old Booking Hall is undergoing refurbishment, but still retains its old roof. |
