Changing Birchwood
2010

Nowadays, Birchwood is an established area with thee main residential districts, several business parks, its own high school and shopping centre and railway station and a lot of open space with parkland, woodland and a nature reserve.  It is tempting to think that with the area being so well established that few changes are taking place.  Currently, in addition to the opening of The Peacock in May, there are at least 3 other building projects in progress in Birchwood.  This page captures some of the changes in photos.

This is a new page that I added in May 2010 and I hope to add more photos from the current projects over the coming weeks.  All images displayed on this site are significantly smaller than the originals.  If you would like to use any of these photographs, please contact me through the link on the Contents page.

Come on England! - Birchwood's Pubs During the World Cup

The World Cup has brought about a splash of colour across England - the red and white of the English flag of St George.  Across Birchwood and all over England buildings are adorned with flags and bunting, and car flags are increasingly common too.  Here are some photos all taken on the evening of 15th June showing each of the pubs within Birchwood.  If I could award a prize for the best effort, I think it would have to go to the Turf and Feather with its flags of all the competing nations, but all three of the district pubs where matches are being shown have been decorated in England's colours.  The Peacock is establishing its business having only recently opened (more on this below), but I have no idea what's going on at The Noggin.  If you work there or use the oldest pub in Birchwood and Risley, please do let me know.

Birchwood's Newest Pub, The Peacock

Situated in the car park of Birchwood Shopping Centre, The Peacock is a Marston's pub that opened its doors on 24th May.  It replaces the former Silver Birch pub that used to be on the opposite side of the shopping centre and is the fifth pub within Birchwood, the others being The Noggin, The Turf and Feather, Nelson's Quarterdeck and The Poacher.  The photos below were all taken in late April and early May.  By the second weekend in May, the building was floodlit.

I was away in the USA on opening day, but we went along for a meal and our first visit on Sunday 6th June.  We were very impressed.  The food was great and the the service was excellent with attentive and friendly staff.  We will certainly be back.  Much of the inside seems to be designed for eating.  I also liked the interior, nicely designed, probably based on a standard theme from the brewery, but it works well.  There are plenty of pictures on the wall, often semi-abstract, and with local themes from Warrington and more locally in Birchwood.

Birchwood Community High School Extension

The area's high school has achieved a lot of success in recent years and is now highly regarded.  Opening in September 2010 are two new buildings, one housing a performing arts centre and the other Birchwood College, a new 6th form.

New Care Home Construction

During 2010, construction began on a new care home within Birchwood.   It is situated on the former waste land that is bounded by Ainscough Road, Bet Fred (the former Spectrum Arena) and the path that runs between the Birchwood Centre and Dewhurst Road, by the new Birchwood One Development.  This area of land had remained unused since the demolition of the former Royal Ordnance Factory.  The path ran parallel to and almost adjacent to one of the former factory roads, a tiny section of which still exists, although overgrown.

Cafe Encounter

Occupying a prominent corner position in the building that used to house the Silver Birch Pub, Cafe Encounter is part of the Encounter Centre that was opened in 2009 by Birchwood Community Church.  The cafe is one of the final sections to open.  There was a dedication for the cafe on 6th June and it opened to the public on Saturday 12th June as part of The Big Kick-off Family Fun Day.
