The Beach

Originally a fishing village, Moelfre developed around its small shingle beach which remains at the heart of the village today.

The Old Lifeboat House

Just around the corner from the main beach is a much smaller pebbled beach at Porth Neigwl, dominated by the old lifeboat house, with its slipway of large stones.  Lifeboats in Moelfre date back to the first half of the 19th century.  The boathouse pictured here was the second in in the village and operated as the lifeboat station between 1875 and 1910 when the current lifeboat house was first opened.

Richard Evans, or Dick (Dic in Welsh) was a crew member of the Moelfre Lifeboat for over 50 years, and was coxswain from 1954 until his retirement in 1970.  He received many bravery awards, including an achievement that remains unique to this day, 2 gold medals for his part in the rescues of crew from the Hindlea in 1959 and the Nafsiporos in 1966.  He was later awarded the British Empire Medal.  He died in 2001 and this bronze sculpture was unveiled in his honour by Prince Charles on 23rd November 2004.  It is in a commanding position in the grounds of Moelfre Seawatch Centre, next to the coastal path, and between the old and current lifeboat station buildings.
